Both a compelling fictional biography and an epic overview of the birth of England. A natural companion piece to Bernard Cornwell's megapopular Saxon series, Iggulden's page-turning narrative provides another piece to the often-challenging puzzle that is tenth-century England.Conn Iggulden's Dunstan is a vivid, convincing character.Iggulden's writing style is rich and accessible, detailing young England and its people in a way that makes the thousand-year gap feel obsolete. An intimate and unforgettable character portrait.A tenth-century English abbot tells of his service to seven kings--a story of pride, vengeance, and blood--in a tale abounding with real historical characters. Fans of the genre will love this masterpiece of historical fiction.Superbly plotted and paced. An absolutely cracking story. The pace is nail-biting and the set dressing magnificent. Through his eyes we watch the story of the making of England.

Iggulden is one of my favorite writers of historical. This book follows that tradition. About 1/3 of the way through, when “The Abbot†is just beginning to accomplish some very-hard-to-believe feats I put the book down and checked some other “true history†sources. This man actually lived, and all of the (for the time) fantastic accomplishments were actually done! If someone had written this as just “fiction†I would have thrown it away as unbelievable. Truly a case of “fact is stranger than fiction.†The novel also gives some insight into the politics and behind-the-scenes activity of people of the age. As always Iggulden takes a bit of license to make the story flow but I do not believe it was at all excessive. I put this right beside his Genghis Khan series (supberb!) and a bit above his Julius Caesar group (also worth the read – for entertainment). I definitely recommend it to readers!
As usual Conn Iggulden is a superb writer, but his enormous talent is wasted on a small character with a brilliant mind, but only limited possibilities. Greatness is out of the question for Abbot Dunstan. Mean-spirited, selfish and unwilling to love any but himself, the Abbot lurks through his story like an intruder and shares mildly interesting low horizons with in somewhat tedious internal dialogue. I put the book down at three quarters, no longer caring what happened.
Well written engaging tale, that appeals to this reader of historical fiction. Yields insights to 10th Century cultural and political dynamics with a few bits of creative license here and there. The protagonist’s narrative is entertaining and not over wrought with endless details that, often, make for a tedious read.Well worth the time, especially if one is a fan of the “ Vikings†TV series.
As expected an interesting and compelling read by the author of so much good historical fiction. As he admits the written history from this time in English history is sparse and divided so it was perfect for his filling in the blanks so cleverly. He turns a Saint into a real flesh and blood man with thoughts and schemes like us all. It was another good read by a considerably good author.
Iggulden did an excellent job of putting you in the world of Dunstan a talented , intellegent, powerful and oh so despicable character who was a player in the court of multiple kings in ancient England. His writing and story telling are a joy!
